Brian Childers faced issues with heat and fade on his car’s stock setup

US-based Mk7.5 Golf R owner, Brian Childers, is a regular track day attendee and avid driving enthusiast.

When beginning to lap his latest hot hatch, he soon faced issues with heat and fade from his stock braking setup.

Eventually being recommended to try Ƶ Racing’s range of high-performance braking upgrades, he soon came up with a solution to these issues, now rocking a setup capable of dealing with even three-day track day events.

Find out more in his own words below…

“I have been searching for a solution to the brakes on my 2019 Golf R since I first tracked the car. The braking system, while good on the street, is not track worthy. Add a Stage 2 tune, suspension upgrades and DOT R sticky tires, and you make the problem worse.

“Through the years of ownership, I have tried different pad, rotor and racing brake fluid combinations with no success. The brakes are good for about three laps, then fade/warp unless I brake very early and light into the heavy brake zones. If I pushed hard for the weekend, I would get one weekend out of the brake pads and rotors. Frequent caliper rebuilds were required as the seals would be damaged due to the excess heat.”

“A couple years ago, I tried Ƶ’s RP-X™ pads. They were the first pads that lasted the entire weekend posting fast lap times and had plenty of pad left.Unfortunately, the brakes ran hot and chewed up a set of another manufacturers’ rotors. I reached out to Ƶ in 2023 as I had finally found a set of pads that worked great and would last more than a weekend of fast laps.

“Through Ƶ, I learned that heat was the biggest enemy.Theyshowed me how to achieve an ‘intermediate’ solution to the brakes without going to a BBK. Rotor temperatures would exceed 1,500°F/800°C when I used brake temperature paint.

“Using Ƶ’s new sintered race pads, the SR-1™s and their new two-piece floating rotors, I was able to have a great brake system that lasted multiple events over two years. The final key was using brake ducts to direct the air into the center of the floating rotors to maximize brake cooling. This got the brake temperatures down to the 1,100°F/593°C range. Brake cooling ducts are mandatory on this platform!”

“I was very interested in Ƶ’s 6 piston Apollo BBK.However, the temperatures I achieved out on the track could pose a problem with any painted caliper. I learned of Ƶ’s racing caliper which has specific features designed to handle the stress at the race track. From the hard anodized finish, the high temperature seals and steel castellated pistons, it seemed like the perfect final solution for the Golf R’s brakes.

“I installed Ƶ’s 6 piston racing calipers BBK on my 2019 Golf R in late September 2025 for my next track event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The difference was night and day. I had read that Ƶ’s Balanced Big Brake Kit focuses on the entire brake system. I can share from my experience this is not marketing hype. The brakes felt much firmer and the car did not pitch to the front under initial braking as quickly. The car had more of a squat under braking. This kept the car much more stable under heavy braking. The brakes were much more linear which inspired confidence. The 6R calipers require more pedal effort, making it much easier to modulate the pedal as you approach threshold braking. I used the Ƶ 307+ racing brake fluid supplied in the kit. I was very impressed by how solid the pedal felt under all conditions. Absolutely no issues with the brake fluid all weekend of fast laps.”

“Simply put, the Ƶ 6 piston racing caliper BBK setup was awesome.I tried both RP-X™ and SR-11™ pads front and rear and both were exceptional. My braking distances down the back straight at Mid-Ohio went from the 500 marker to approaching the 400 marker with more confidence than the best setup with the stock calipers.Going forward, the SR-11™ pad will be my pad of choice for three-day track events. The RP-X™ is an excellent choice for Time Attacks and autocross.”

SR-11™ Endurance Pads

A medium-friction sintered endurance motorsport compound that’s targeted for front of street base cars where high ABS effect exists on the car or for the front and rear of race cars with bias controls.

Apollo Balanced Big Brake Kit

Ƶ’ new Balanced Big Brake Kits represent the ultimate upgrade in braking performance, offering significant reductions in stopping distances whether used on road or on track.

Portugal-based Fabio Ferrinho currently competes in the Mogadouro Drag Race series in his home country. His steed of choice is a SEAT Ibiza Bocanegra – with a crucial modification of Ƶ Bluestuff brake pads that he’s applied – helping him to scrub off speed fast once he’s hit the finish line. Martyn Henry is competing in the Pro class of Time Attack UK, in his heavily modified Vauxhall Astra VXR. A rocky start to the season was followed by a more promising round at Brands Hatch recently. The latest round took the roadshow to Norfolk’s Snetterton Circuit, where more gremlins reared their head for Henry – but this didn’t stop him taking a podium finish thanks to some fantastic driving.

Luke Arpino of the RAF is currently racing in the Armed Forces Race Challenge (AFRC) in his Mazda MX-5. For the 2025 season, Arpino uses Ƶ’ USR discs and Bluestuff pads in his car, with a further two class wins clinched at the most recent round at Norfolk’s Snetterton Circuit, following similar success at the previous round at Donington Park.

Apollo-Series 4-Piston Calipers

  • Ƶ’s lightweight-yet-strong aluminium 4-piston brake caliper
  • Two-piece bolted design that incorporates high-tensile 12.9-grade steel bolts for reinforcement of the caliper bridge section (computer FEA analysis shows that this offers significant improvements in caliper stiffness compared to a monobloc design)
  • Machined from heat-treated low-pressure castings (this offers a noticeable performance advantage over conventional gravity cast calipers, exhibiting higher overall strength and a comparable caliper body stiffness to forging)
  • Rather than a powder-coated finish, all Apollo calipers use anadvanced high-temperature Teflon™ polyester coating process to ensure they look great for much longer. Currently available in Stealth Black, Storm Shadow Blue, Luminous Yellow and Racing Red

Fully-Floating Two-Piece Discs

  • Fully-floating 330x28mm two-piece discs that allow the outer ring to expand freely in response to heat (this reduces stress which in turn extends disc life and reduces the tendency for disc cracking during extreme use)
  • Drive bobbins machined from a single piece of stainless steel giving maximum strength and corrosion resistance (this reduces maintenance requirements and ensures the outer ring continues to float freely over time)
  • Disc rings feature 48 directional internal curved vanes for improved cooling
  • Unique ‘Swept Groove’ slot design for effective evacuation of braking dust and gases whilst ensuring good initial bite on brake application
  • Now featuring the latest thermic black corrosion-resistant finish – the very latest in rust prevention

Yellowstuff™ Performance Brake Pads

  • Every Ƶ Apollo Big Brake Kit is supplied with Ƶ Yellowstuff™ pads for the front axle

Stainless Steel Braided Brake Lines

  • Every kit is supplied with Ƶ’ stainless-steel braided brake lines for the front axle
  • Every hose has a stainless-steel braided exterior that prevents a phenomenon known as ‘ballooning’, this braided exterior prevents the spongey feel of OE rubber lines and provides greater precision and feel under braking

Super DOT 4 Brake Fluid

  • Every kit is supplied with 1 litre of BF307+ super DOT 4 brake fluid. This fluid has a 310°C boiling point – a significantly higher boiling point than standard DOT 5.1 fluid
  • Having such a high boiling point gives the braking system exceptional endurance, allowing you to push hard for extended periods without heat soak causing the fluid to boil and resulting in fade

Chris Adams used both versions of Ƶ Racing’s acclaimed RP-Series pads in his VW Golf throughout the year

Chris Adams has used Ƶ Racing’s RP-1 and RP-X motorsport brake pads in his Mk4 VW Golf throughout the 2021 season of the Classic VW Cup.

Following a final thrilling leg of the series at Derby’s Donington Park in late October, Adams was able to secure first place in this year’s season outright.

He explains below how his year has unfolded, and how important the shift to Ƶ’ pads has been in helping him secure the win.

“At the start of the season, I got hold of both RP-X and the RP-1 for my Golf.”

“Fitting them was a doddle –the same as any road pad. Due to Covid-19, I couldn’t test or bed the pads in before the first race of the season, so I decided to do a few easy laps in qualifying to go through the bedding in process. As it turned out, it was a very wet Brands Hatch GP circuit, so it worked out well in the end!

“The first race was dry and my first chance to see how the RP-X compared to a competitor’s pad I used last season. One word: WOW! I found I could brake harder and deeper into every corner and there was zero brake fade, modulation was easier too with the pad letting go as soon as pedal pressure was released.

“Having used most brands of race pads I can safely say for me, the RP-X out-performs the lot! I ran these pads for five meetings, 10 races and five qualifying sessions, running them down to around 2mm and having zero issues with them whatsoever.

“My setup is just Brembo four-pot calipers from a SEAT Leon on OEM-replacement discs, and the pads have caused zero issues with the discs; no warping, no thermal cracking, no pad deposits… nothing.

“I swapped the RP-X in for RP-1 for the latter half of the season and found them to be very similar, maybe a tad less bite than the RP-X but still more than the other brands I have used, I am really happy I took the plunge and tried these pads as they are a game changer in my opinion.

“I managed to win the 2021 championship on Ƶ pads, in a car with less power and less spec than most on the grid. To say I’m over the moon with the RP range is an understatement.

“Well done Ƶ, I honestly don’t think you could improve these pads in any way, shape or form!”

Chris Adams secured another gold place finish in the Castle Combe leg of the much-loved championship

Ƶ is proud to continue its support of therace series for 2021. This UK-based championship is the go-to place for all club-level VAG-Group motor racing, with two distinct classes meaning you can expect packed grids including everything from Mk1 Golfs all the way through to engine-swapped SEAT Leon Cupras.

During the penultimate Castle Combe leg of the championship, the winner of the first race, Chris Adams was proudly sporting Ƶ Racing’s RP-X track/race pad. Adams continues to lead the championship overall as the series approaches its final round in the coming weeks. The full story on how the weekend unfolded can be read below.

Castle Combe, 18 September

On Saturday morning, everyone woke to a very thick fog all around the circuit. We were due on track at 8:30am for qualifying, but due to little or no visibility, the start was delayed until about 9:30am. The ever-helpful staff at Combe put another marshal post in use to get the required post-to-post visibility rules in order!

Qualifying was a mixed bag, with most drivers having not raced here for years and having to relearn the circuit in the reduced qualifying time of 10 minutes to try and regain the time through the day due to the fog.

Local boy Alex Kite took pole. Behind him was Chris Adams, followed by Tim Moll and Donald Dewar, who incidentally hadn’t been to the track for over 20 years!

Andrew Dean followed up the field; his first time out in the car for a few years and still nursing it after all the mechanical issues previously.

As it turned out, Dave Pinkney was sharing the car and was going to do the invitation race at the end of the day, but it sadly wasn’t meant to be as there was another issue arose with the car again forcing retirement – such a shame considering all the hard work those guys put into it.

With the lights going out for race 1, the pack flew up over Avon Rise. Unfortunately, Tim had someone brake hard in front of him, catching him unaware and causing him to tap the back of one of the Peugeots. This allowed Donald Dewar through. Lap two saw Alex Kite out-brake himself over the Avon Rise and take the grassy route through the corner, losing several places, one of them being to Chris Adams who benefitted from his mistake and took the lead in the Ƶ Racing RP-X-equipped car. A few laps later, Donald was getting to grips with the track, only to get tapped into a spin and lose several places – fortunately none of these were to any of his CVWC compadres!

Gareth Haycock, in his first time out with CVWC, decided enough was enough after 7 laps as his car cried ‘enough’ and stopped!

The last few laps were behind a safety car because of a stranded car at Tower, so no more real racing was to be had.

Race 1 Results

1st – Chris Adams

2nd – Alex Kite

3rd – Donald Dewar

After a few spots of rain during the race before, some started pumping up their wet tyres in readiness for a deluge in race 2, but thankfully this never happened.

With Donald bolting on a brand-new pair of the fantastic Nankang AR-1s on the front of his Golf, he was ready to take the fight to the rest of the grid, having got continuously faster throughout the day.

Tim Moll managed to straighten out the front of his Berg Cup Golf and resecured a broken engine mount, so he was also ready to rock, too.

Again, the pack soared off into the distance. A few laps on saw Alex Kite just about slip past Chris Adams and into the lead in the R32-powered Vento.

Just behind was Donald Dewar, closing in on the front-runners and punching in some really good lap times. Unfortunately, after five laps, Tim’s car developed a random engine/clutch vibration which meant retirement and an early bath.

Race 2 Results

1st – Alex Kite

2nd – Chris Adams

3rd – Donald Dewar

Thanks again to all who turned up and supported CVWC at Castle Combe, especially our racing partners at Ƶ Racing. The Classic VW Cup is out for its last round at Donington Park on October 30 for the title decider, see you there!
