ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµâ€™s Apollo-Series Brake Calipers

Apollo brake calipers utilise a two-piece bolted design, incorporating high-tensile 12.9-grade steel bolts for reinforcement of the caliper bridge section. Computer FEA analysis shows that the utilisation of high-tensile steel bolts to reinforce the bridge brings significant improvements in caliper stiffness compared to a mono-block design. A stiffer bridge section means less elongation during brake apply, giving a firmer and more responsive pedal feel, especially after a period of harder braking where the aluminium bridge of a mono-block design caliper softens appreciably with increasing temperature.

Unlike the vast majority of cast calipers, which are typically gravity cast, Apollo-series caliper bodies are machined from heat-treated low-pressure castings. Low pressure casting is a vastly more expensive production method than conventional gravity casting, but by forcing the aluminium alloy into the mould under pressure the consistency of the finished part is greatly improved. This gives ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµâ€™s Apollo series brake calipers a noticeable performance advantage over conventional gravity cast calipers, exhibiting higher overall strength and a comparable caliper body stiffness to forging.

Unlike most painted calipers on the market, Apollo brake calipers are not painted using a powder coat finish. Powder coat cracks and discolours with exposure to high heat, meaning that powder coated calipers look great out the box, but the colour quickly fades away in use. Motorcycle racer Pep Brown was impressed with the braking upgrades on his high-performance car

British Army’s Pep Brown is a successful motorcycle racer within the ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ-supported Army Motorcycle Road Race Team. When he’s not deployed on operation or tearing up a race track on two wheels, he can usually be found behind the wheel of his Kia Stinger GTS.

This 370bhp twin-turbo V6 sports saloon is an impressive car out of the box, but with a relatively high kerb weight, puts a lot of demand on its braking system.

Pep recently decided to upgrade the brake pads to ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµâ€™s Yellowstuff items and after 4000 miles, he has been very impressed with the results.

His thoughts can be read below in his own words.

The Kia is a heavy car as you would imagine. It takes some stopping power when you’re up to a significant speed.

I found the standard brakes to simply be too spongy, so opted for ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµâ€™s Yellowstuff pads.

After 4000 miles, I can say that they are instantly better; no fade at all, not even from high speeds. They also look great against the red calipers, and operated well in the dry and the wet.

This is a must-have upgrade if you have this type of car.

Comprehensively modified sports saloon used the high-performance braking products on both road and track

David Shipp owns an impressively modified example of Skoda’s Octavia vRS (TSI 230 manual variant) that allows him to not only enjoy this acclaimed saloon in both everyday and fast road driving conditions, but also on the occasional track day.
When the time came to replace his brake discs and pads recently, David turned to ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ to help him accommodate this road/track brief, opting for Bluestuff pads and GD discs up front, and Yellowstuff pads with factory vented discs at the rear.
David talks us through his choice and how the brakes have fared so far in his own words below.

Why ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ? I wanted a pad that would perform well on track but would also work very well for everyday driving.

How do they perform on the road? The Bluestuff and Yellowstuff pads work very well from cold. They give a good pedal feel and there is very little noise from either set. Once up to a decent temperature, the pads give a reassuring bite without being aggressive. The grooves in the discs help with cooling and the dust is about average.

How do they perform on track? Once the initial bedding-in period has been performed, the Bluestuff pads do need to have at least one good heat cycle through them and then allowed to cool down before they reach their optimum performance on track.

They do not suffer from fading and the pedal remains consistent when hot. Under hard braking there is a bit of noise, probably from the grooves in the disc, but nothing too severe. Pad life is good and the discs wear true and flat.

If you want a brake setup that works well on the road but can also give excellent performance on track days, these ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ products will satisfy these criteria.
